What is the difference between a TIG welder and a MIG welder and a ARC welder and Torch welder and plasma cutter, why are their different types of welders and which is the best one for most welds done for building stuff and and repairing stuff. Is their welders that run off electric. ...

I'm looking to do my exhaust, price quotes from shops are so high I could buy all mandrel bent SS pipes vs aluminiumized steel pipes they'd bend in house and get a $300 welder to do it myself and pay the same. I've seen many recommend a MIG welder for thin material and things like exhaust jobs. But is it such a drastic difference between using a MIG welder for that work vs a wire fed one? I can get a wire fed welder from Lincoln for $350 but for $100 more I can get one ready for MIG out of the box. I'd really like to get the best bang for my buck but if I can get away with the cheaper one and not have the odds stacked against me by using stick vs MIG to weld the pipes that would be great. So my question is should I just pay more and get the MIG because it is much more suited to this type of work, Stainless steel exhaust pipe welding or can I do as good a job with the wire fed welder? Two models I'm looking at from Homedepot.com model#K2189-1 and model#K2190-1(mig ready) sensible_man: I had thought MIG meant a gas was used in conjunction with the fed wire and that no gas meant it was a 'wire fed' welder not a MIG unit. Thank you for clearing that up for me. ...

I'm planning on renting a 117volt welder, I need it to do some custom exhaust work. I have the piping but will need someone to bend it for me, where can I get this done? Also is this welder going to be good enough for welding the piping together? ...

What do you think is a better career? So far, here's the pros and cons I've found out in my little "research" Auto Mechanic - I need to be an apprentice even after completing pre-apprenticeship training at a college. As a level 1 apprentice, I'd be back to $10 per hour or less... but will have large opportunity for growth... I currently make around $14 in my data entry job. Welder - I can complete a welder course and be "job ready" upon graduation... and I'd be starting at $15 per hour and work my way little by little to the top. Though I heard that welder jobs might require alot of heights (I have a phobia for heights)... risk me to dangerous gases, heat, and chemicals... and most jobs are contractual (I'm not sure... pls correct me if I'm wrong). Please help me decide. Thanks. ... there isnt really anything I "like". I'm looking more at practicality and income... ...

My switch broke on my campbell hausfeld welder, the switch is shorted out and melted. I was wondering if my welder is still ok? Or could it have shorted out the welder? It is an arc welder. 120 volts. Also could I use just a regular toggle switch on it? Or do I have to buy the original rocker switch for it? ...

i am trading a motorcycle 82 honda v45 for a hobart welder it is a 100percent duty 200 amp welder with 220 outlets and 110 outlets i was wondering what do i need to look for in the welder to make sure i am not getting ripped off i have welded with it with 5/32 rod welded pretty good but i welded on the trailer it was sitting on and the welder didnt have and rubber or wood under it and the coil went bad but the fella says he got a new coil and it works i was wondering if anyone knew what else i needed to look for before i made the trade ...

I looking for a manual for the Hobart welder I have a serial number but no model number (serial # 494WR05047). Been to there webpage but it doesn?t come up when I enter the serial number. Any one has any ideas how to find the model number and manual for this welder please post? Thanks ...

I had a welding class a while back and there was this miller wire feed welder, fairly large probably around 100-300 amp range, with a built in feeder. It used flux cored wire. It made beautiful welds. After welding you CHIPPED the slag off in big pieces SIMILAR TO STICK WELDING, very easy clean up, IT WASN'T LIKE MOST OTHER SMALLER WIRE FEED WELDERS THAT PRODUCE SLAG YOU HAVE WIRE BRUSH OFF, and you still don't get it all off (E.G. a small lincoln welder with .035 innershield wire.) My questions are, what machine could this be? Also, is it the machine, or the specific type of consumable that produces a weld like this with such easy slag removal and visual appeal? I know this is wordy but hopefully someone will know what I am talking about. I want to buy one of these machines. You can email me, I will provide my phone number, I would like to talk to someone with knowledge if possible. i thought i would get the most response in the automotive category given the choices. thanks. ...

well, i came across a welder today that runs 230$. it is brand new and is a wire feed welder. i was wondering if the weld would be strong enough to hold together a homemade trailer. i will be making the trailer with angle iron as it is commonly used in most trailers. will this welder make the welds strong enough that the tralier wont fall apart. i will probably be making no bigger then a 2,000 lb capacity trailer. will this work. or do i need to get a bigger welder. i beleive it is 100 amps. i dont want to have to spend much more then 230$ if i dont have to though. the angle iron is 1/8 inch thick. also.....could you recommend some good welding sites that give free information on welding. if possible i want to buy an electric welder and not gas. but would prefer the 230$ if it will do the job. if it wont could you recommend the amount of amps i will need to weld it. thanks in advance ...

i am thinking about buying a mig welder, what is the best brand, what are the mig welders good for(how thick of metal can they weld, and what types of metal) also what would be the equipment that i would need? Thanks ...

i need to weld 2.5" aluminum piping together for a custom intercooler system for my car. the piping is of average thinkness, between 1/16" and 1/8" think walls. i am thinking of purchasing a small $100 welder such as a 90 amp mig wire welder that does not use gas. it can plug into a 110 outlet. could this work? ...
