My husband and I had our first baby 4 months ago. Since then (it actually started about a month before the baby was born), our visits with my mother-in-law have been... well... excruciating. She has always been difficult, but for the last 5 months, it has been unbearable. My husband agrees that she is difficult and that she is a bit crazy (the truth: she is IMPOSSIBLE and she's INSANE). At least he is (almost) on my side.
First of all, the whole time I was pregnant, my mother-in-law bragged and bragged about how she had her son (my husband) drug-free. She repeatedly asked me if I was getting an epidural. (Like it's any of her business) I told her I would wait and see and get it if I needed it... I said I was 50/50 on the issue -- wasn't sure. She would repeat "Well I had a drug-free labor and delivery" with her nose up in the air.
Well... I tried really hard not to for around 10hrs, but I ended up getting an epidural after all (I had to have an induction and the pitocin really kicked my ***). Since our baby was born four months ago, my MIL has asked me about my epidural on four separate occasions (the first time was 3 days after my baby was born). Each time she brings it up, she wants to know EXACTLY when in the labor process I got the epidural and how long I was in pain before I got the epidural. When I tell her that I was in a terrible amount of pain and only got the epidural just a couple of hours before my baby was born, she says in a very negative tone, "Oh, good. It's good that you felt that pain." It shocks the crap out of me every time she does this. She says, "oh, good" with her eyes all narrowed like a snake. I'm tellin' ya -- she's so mean. I think it?s sicko that she is glad I was in pain.
She also argues with anyone who says that our baby looks like me. If someone tells me that our baby has my eyes, she'll say, "No!" She'll say that they're my husband's eyes! She hates it when anyone says that my own baby looks like me. She says the baby only looks like my husband. This hurts me! I never realized that looking like me was such a terrible thing for my baby. I never knew I was so ugly.
She always invites herself over to see the baby (she never says she wants to see my husband or me). She tells us that she doesn't want to see the baby unless the baby is awake. We'll tell her to come (for example) at 4pm and she'll say, "Well, will the baby be awake then?" HOW the **** should I know?? We try to accommodate her, but if the baby is asleep at any point during her visit, she complains about that.
While she?s visiting the baby, she doesn?t listen to ANYTHING my husband or I say. My husband tried to teach her the right way to feed our baby. She ignores him, holding the baby?s bottle at a downward angle when she?s ?feeding? the baby so that the baby sucks and swallows lots of air. Of course, the baby ends up burping and is painfully gassy for the next 24 hours. When the baby has had shots in her thighs, my MIL ignores us when we tell her where the shots are and holds her arms tight around the baby?s thighs, making me cringe and making the baby cry LOTS.
My MIL tells us not to use the pacifier because it ?keeps the baby from expressing itself? even though our doctor said that pacifiers are beneficial for the baby?s terrible acid reflux (it makes the baby suck and swallow which keeps things moving and aids digestion). When we explain this to her, she just says, ?What? What?? and takes the pacifier away so the baby can scream her head off and ?express itself.? Ugh. I can?t take it anymore.
These are just the worst, meanest, most current nasty things she does. There are lots more that she's been doing for years. She asks me what size clothes I'm wearing, tells me my arms are "meaty" (what the **** does that mean?!), asks me if I'm going to the gym, etc.
My husband wants to minimize what he calls ?drama.? He is a good man, but he is reluctant to talk to his mother about these issues. He says talking with her about these issues will cause a dramatic uproar. He says that his mother doesn?t get to see us very often and he doesn?t want to spend what little time they have together nagging at her. Funny -- it doesn?t seem to bother her any.
HELP! I end up in tears after each visit and I can?t stand it anymore.
...
My friend got pregnant with her first baby, we were all excited! Then she had her first baby shower at 8 months pregnant. It was wonderful and she got lots and lots of presents for the baby. Practically EVERYTHING she needed. I ended up spending nearly $30 for a gift for the baby and it seemed like everyone else did too.
Now the baby is almost 1 month old and she's having ANOTHER baby shower today. I can see why because she has a large family and so does her husband.. but the other day she confessed to me that it would practically be the same people at her second shower. I can't afford a present yet AGAIN for her, so Im not going to take one, which is fine with her.
Then she calls me to remind me of the baby shower that's today and she said she's going to be passing around another invitation to the next one when the baby is 6 months old. ANOTHER BABY SHOWER?!?! WTF?!?! Shes planning on yet ANOTHER shower when the baby is older. WHEN WILL THIS STOP?!!?
I always thought that when a woman has a baby that she's entitled to ONE baby shower or maybe TWO if it's twins or the mother is struggling.
My friend is NOT struggling for clothes or anything for that baby. She seems like she's taking this whole baby shower thing a little too far but I dont want to say anything to her about it.
My sister in law is having twins and shes only going to have one baby shower in January.
I mean, we're all happy that the baby is doing good and that theyre new parents and all.. but isnt it a little greedy to have 3 baby showers for the SAME BABY?!?! Someone give me a clue here!
Shes practically throwing these showers herself. The first one with the help of her sister, and this one is with the help of her mother-in-law. The next one she's going to be throwing all by herself.
Im glad Im not the only one who finds this greedy!!

The beating of your heart, baby
(Beating Hearts Baby)
The beating of you heart, baby
You, you want nothing to do with me [x2]
I, I don't know what to do with you
'cause you don't know what you do to me
[Chorus:]
Baby is this love for real?
Let me in your arms to feel
The beating of your heart baby
The beating of your heart, baby
[repeat]
Girl, you really got your hold on me [x2]
Girl, you gotta get away from me
'Cause you want nothing to do with me
[Chorus (x2)]
In spite of you
Even out of view
Still I love all of you
I do, yeah
[repeat]
You, you want nothing to do with me [x2]
Baby is this love for real?
Let me in your arms to feel
