A woodpecker from Hawaii and one from California were arguing about which
place had the toughest trees. The Hawaii woodpecker said Hawaii had a tree
that no woodpecker could peck. The California woodpecker accepted his
challenge, and promptly pecked a hole in the tree with no problem. The
Hawaiian woodpecker was in awe.
The California woodpecker then challenged the Hawaiian woodpecker to peck a
tree in California that was absolutely im-peckable (a term woodpeckers like
to use). The Hawaiian woodpecker expressed confidence he could do it, so
accepted the challenge.
After flying to California, the Hawaii woodpecker successfully pecked the
tree with no problem.
So the two woodpeckers were now confused. How is it that the California
woodpecker was able to peck the Hawaiian tree and the Hawaiian woodpecker
was able to peck the tree in California, but neither! one wa s able to peck
the tree in their own state?
After much woodpecker-pondering, they came to the same conclusion . . .
Your pecker is always harder when you're away from home.

# I pushed my finger in the woodpeckers hole,
the wood pecker said 'god bless my soul, take it out, take it out, take it out, ree-move it!
I removed my finger from the woodpeckers hole and the woodpecker said 'god bless my soul, put it back, put it back, put it back, ree-place it!
I replaced my finger in the woodpeckers hole and the woodpecker said 'god bless my soul, turn it round, turn it round, turn it round, ree-volve it!
I revolved my finger in the woodpeckers hole and the woodpecker said 'god bless my soul, take it out, take it out, take it out, ree-tract it!
I retracted my finger from the woodpeckers hole and the woodpecker said 'god bless my soul, take a sniff, take a sniff, take a sniff,
reee-volting!

Woodpeckers have very long tounges perhaps 10 inches long, often with barbs at the ends for stabbing insects, they often use a glue for the toung to help pullin the insects and a glue sovent in the stomach to unglue the tasty treat and digest it.
Problem... some woddpeckers have tounges that stick out like us form the mouth, and the european woodpecker has a tounge that starts in the throat and wrapps around the back of the head, down the beak and out....
how did it micro evolve
1) created with the tounge wrapped around and micro evolved to have some woodpeckers today with ordingary tounges sticking out
2) naturalist evolution, tounges started as other birds and then went backwards wrapping around th ehead and down the beak and out... and how would a series of gradual changes explain this?
Incredible Creatures that Defy Evolution I by Job Martin
the nature of the radicle change would be the tounge wrapping aound the back of the head down the beak and out, in the case of the european woodpecker... but not the case in many woodpeckers which have touges that stick straight out, not wrapping around the head

Out of the blue this woodpecker decided to peck on my wood sidings...forming a thumb size hole and a crack along the corner of the siding. Two questions:
1) What's the best way to fix the holes?
2) How to make sure my house is not attractive to woodpeckers???

We have a woodpecker stuck in between the walls of our home. Any ideas how to get him out and to go away? The noise is driving me crazy! I know that in some states woodpeckers are protected animals and can't be killed but I'm not sure if that is the case here in AZ. Any non-killing/non violent suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

We have an injured juvenile downy woodpecker and have made several calls to local avian vets, rehab facilities and wildlife sanctuaries. Thus far, no response. While I still hope to hear back from someone knowledgeable who can take him, what do we do if they don't? He has an injured wing, but otherwise is in good spirits. If he survives his injury, but can not fly, what are the odds that we can raise him in captivity? We have managed to feed him a couple of mealworms, but after that....? Has anyone else done this or had experience with this kind of bird? Thank you in advance.

Here is the description, it was too skittish to get a pic. It was very mottled-brown and speckled, and had an irridescent bluish-green colored breast. It was large, about the size of an adult red-headed woodpecker, and acted like a woodpecker. It was in my hanging platform feeder feasting on pecans. I live 30 miles north of Atlanta, GA.

I have been seeing a giant woodpecker hanging around my yard and every day he gets closer to my house. This thing is about the same size of a small crow and won't go away. I don't like killing animals but want him gone, if he goes to work on my house he will do some big time damage. How do I scare him off with out hurting him. He looks really mean!

My family has a woodpecker that has been living in the columns of our house for about a month now. I heard that putting something shiny up would scare it away. Does that work, or do you have another suggestion?

Last year we had a woodpecker who poked holes in our siding in a couple of places around the house. We kept chasing him off, but he'd come back. We had peace over the winter, but he returned this spring with company...presumably grown babies from last summer. Help! How do we get them to stop? They're digging some nasty holes in the siding in several places.

We have a woodpecker that is pecking on our satellite dish. At first he was pecking on the arm, and although it was annoying, it wasn't harming anything. We covered the arm with pipe tubing so he couldn't peck. Now he is pecking on the actual dish and it interferes with our tv picture. We've been told he's trying to attract a mate. We don't want to shoot him because we're afraid that we will miss and hit the satellite.
Any ideas or suggestions?

someone asked me today what this saying meant...and I didn't know....does anyone know? Also, I can't remember word for word but it was somehing about a woodpecker pecking on a plastic tree. Does that make any sense to anyone? Advise if it does, don't bother if it doesn't.
I just found out it's a poem......btw, some of your answers were just as dumb as my question.
