are HDMI cables better than HD Component cables when it comes to a PS3 ...

I have a 720p plasma screen with DVI input. I also have an HDTV Sony Bravia 1080p screen with the HDMI input. I bought an HDMI cable to DVI and it didn't work for my plasma screen. I bought a regular HDMI cable for my HDTV and it didn't work either. Both presented a similar problem: I start up my PS3 without any discs to get to the menu screen. I plug in the HDMI or HDMI to DVI cables from the PS3 to the TV. I then go to Display settings and click on video output. I click on HDMI. My screen goes blank, and the HDMI doesn't work. I changed the TV's inputs to DVI output and HDMI inputs and it still doesn't work. On one TV, the audio is working, but not the video. It is incredible frustrating. It works perfectly with the regular RCA cables. Why isn't the HDMI working? What am I doing wrong? I am getting the feeling that my PS3 is defective. Please somebody provide a solution. Thanks! ...

i have a Sony DVD player with HDMI output, a Sony Receiver with 2 HDMI in and 1 HDMI monitor out, plus several A/V in/out channels, and a Samsung DLP TV with 2 HDMI inputs. I connect the DVD to the receiver's HDMI DVD input and the Receiver to the TV via HDMI. I get a picture on the TV, but no sound. Everything i read says that this is the correct hookup. The internal mute on the TV is off. i spoke to Sony and they said to run an audio cable from the TV to the audio input on the receiver. this works, but i thought that HDMI will carry both sound and video. based on what i think i know, i should get sound and picture going through my A/V receiver and then a picture on the TV and sound from the speakers. it's just one more cable i would have to buy and dont want to. Any help wopuld be appreciated, thanks. ...

I have everything done, I just need to get it onto an HDMI channel. I have my PS3 on an HDMI channel, but the process is a bit different for the HDMI dvd player. HELP?? i have 2 HDMI ports I have 2 HDMI ports in my television, I think the trick is to get it onto an HDMI channel. There are two HDMI channels, one is occupied by my PS3. I have the HDMI cable hooked up to the dvd player and the other side in the HDMI port, i choose the resolutions as 1080i, and the resolution says CVBS.  Ok I have a HP Pavilion Laptop with HDMI and I-Link ports. And I also have a Sony HC-7 HD camcorder. I just bought a HDMI cable (HDMI to HDMI) today and I plugged it into my camcorder and my laptop but nothing happens. How do I get my recorded videos in high defination mode up onto my laptop using the HDMI cable?? I tried plugging both the I-link cable as well as HDMI cable at same time, but still nothing happens unless the video is converted to DV instead of HDV...Please help! Thanks in advance. ...

I may seem ignorant on new technology, but here it goes. I have an HDMI output on my HD-DVD, and a HDMI input/output on my receiver. But I have no HDMI input on my TV (it's about 6 years old, so it's ancient in the technology world). I can connect via HDMI cable to the receiver to get "HD" sound (or whatever you want to call the sound output). And I suppose I can use component cables to get a pretty good video. But don't I loose the upconversion benefits with respect to normal DVDs of the HD-DVD player w/o HDMI? Is there anyway to take the video signal from my receiver to the TV beside component input? I don't think my TV even has a DVI input. Am I basically SOL on the upconversion benefits here? Edit to add that I have an HDTV set, not a standard one. It can go up to 540p/1080i. So upconversion would have some benefit. ...

Newbie here. I'm trying to understand HDMI and Home Thetre systems. I currently have a Panasonic Plasma HD tv with 2 HDMI inputs and a comcast digital cable box with HDTV. I'm looking to get an economical Home theatre system and DVD player. I believe that I want to get a DVD player that does upconvert for my HD tv which requires the HDMI? Most of the lower end receivers I am looking at don't have HDMI inputs or outputs. If I get an upconvert DVD can I/should I use the hDMI port and connect it directly to the TV and then run a seperate audio cable to a receiver. Or should I fork out the money to get a receiver with HDMI ports. What are the disadvantages or advantages? Also I've seen some recievers that do the upconvert...is that a better way to go? Ultimately I'm trying to achieve a decent sounding system that's easy to use without spending big bucks. I want to hook up a DVD player, VCR, and play music through the surround sound. I was looking at the Onkyo HT-S590S Home theatre. thanks! ...

Hi, i bought a hdmi goodmans freeview box and im having a few problems with it. I plugged it in with a hdmi lead, the hdmi lead i plugged into a hdmi switcher which is plugged into my tv. A lot of the time the picture is 4:3 even though i selected 16:9. And also the audio doesnt work a lot of the time, have to turn of the box and turn it back on for it to work. When i switch channels it tends to cut off the sound aswell. I have tried plugged it in directly via hdmi to the tv aswell but makes no difference. I am using the cheapest hdmi lead i could find but i have read they arent any different from the more expensive ones? Is it a problem with the digi box or my other equipment? Thanks ...

We are having problems with the connection between our DVD player and TV. We recently bought an upconvert DVD player (a JVC HR-XVC38, to be exact) to go with our HDTV (a CRT Samsung slimfit TX-S3082WH) To connect the two nd get the best picture, we bought a Phillips HDMI cable: It is this cable, but it may be a shorter length. The Problem: tried to watch DVD, but we only got the picture- no sound. we tried muting/unmuting, changing from HDMI input 1 to HDMI input 2; we switched DVDs, turned the power of the TV and DVD player off and on again, and reconnected the HDMI cord at both ends (TV and DVD player)... none of these things worked. does anyone know of any particular problems with these specific products? any general typical problems? We have had problems with the sound being off-sync with DVDs before, so I think it's the DVD player, but idk-all are under warranty, I think ...

ok guys i have a 1080P dlp 63 inch tv with 2 hdmi outlets two component outlets and 4 a/v outlets. my question is this on one of my hdmi outles is my ps3 ,it is the only thing that truly puts out 1080p resolution. in the other i have my hdmi cable for my HD satelite , on that same hd satelite box i have a set of component cables thast come from the box and hook to a component outlet on the tv .on my tv i have an option to split the screen and watch two picture at one time, the only thing icant do is watch the 2 hdmi outlets at the same time so my questions are does having the hdmi and the component cables both coming from the satelite reciever weaken the signal to my tv, and which one would give the best picture. i have switched back and forth and can barely tell the differnce so what im basicly wanting to know is how can i gat the best picture to my tv since hd cable channels are reaklly only broadcasted in1080i at the most so does it really make a differencr which cable to use? ...

i just bought a lcd tv with hdmi input. Currently the tv and dvd is connected via the composite signal and I'm planning to buy a new dvd player with hdmi capability to maximize the quality of the lcd tv. My problem is that my home theater receiver does not have hdmi capability. I know that HDMI carries both video and audio signals. Is it possible to use video and audio separately. HDMI just for the video and Digital (coaxial) for audio? ...

I bought some HDMI Cables from last year and have noticed that Wikipedia says there is a change in 'HDMI' status to 1.3. Like when USB jumped to USB 2.0. Does anyone have any HDMI 1.3 equipment that can tell me what a large difference there is? Do my original HDMI cables still work with this equipment? ...

My father-in-law has had his 42" Samsung LCD HDTV for less than a year and his HDMI ports are going out. He has the extended warrenty but according to the warrenty review it is the end user's use and abuse of the HDMI Port so it is not covered. The service techs he called said that it is a re-occuring p[roblem with the HDMI ports and it is a known flaw because the weight if the HDMI cables cause the port to fail. I can fix it easy, but my quiestion is has anyone else had this problem and do you think it is class action time? I mean they know they have the flaw and they don't address anything about securing your HDMI cables for stress relief or anything. ...
