In 1975, on the eve of May Day, secret police dressed in chemical warfare suits sealed off a zoo in a small Czechoslovakian town, and ordered the destruction of the largest captive herd of giraffes in the world. This is an actual event that occured in 1975. 49 giraffes were slaughtered (23 of them pregnant). It is difficult to find any information on this incident; the Czech government never released any information and the new government continues to be silent on the matter. This is the subject of a new (fiction) novel by JM Ledgard titled "Giraffe". So what are your theories on what happened? Why kill almost 50 of these majestic animals? My personal theory, based on the scanty information, is that they had detected some kind of virulent disease among the giraffe herd, something that could have gotten out into the zoo population and possibly infected livestock as well. It is the detail about the chemical warfare suits that drives this theory. However, I can't think of any animal disease that would be carried by a giraffe that could also infect a human. I probably will never learn Ledgard's take on the matter because I love giraffes and this book will certainly depress me for days on end. ...

I inherited 6 million dollars from my grandfathers death and I am going to move into a home with 10 acres in New Jersey. I really want a Giraffe or two. I've worked with exotic animals for as long as I can remember, and now that keeping a Giraffe is a possibility I'd love some info. Where could I look to purchase one? Are they endangered? Does anyone know the price for one? What permits will I need? Any other information would be great. Im not worried too much about caring for it, because I will provide it the best home, vet, and supplies. I just need help getting started. Yes, I'm aware that I am weird. But I am new to typing. Thank you everyone and God Bless! ...
