 I am an avid chess player and i am worried about the rapid decline of chess these days. Why do you think the popularity is declining? My answer: I think chess was used as a political tool during the cold war era. It's popularity during the cold war era was unprecedented. Espicially after the 72 match with spassky and fischer, chess memberships everywhere doubled and chess in the mainsteam was at it's height. Because of this chess was never marketed commercially, it was only a political tool, which would decline as political strifes ended. And since it was never commerciliazed properly, it would remain a game that is virtually unknown to the newer generation. And because of this ignorence, the game has many tags which disassosiate it with mainsteam culture. Nerdiness, old people's game, too complex for the average mind etc... ...

 I have been playing Yahoo Chess for several weeks now. As of yesterday, I went to play and it now states Divinci Code chess. I don't like this because I really have a difficult time with the pieces and the way they look. I don't want to go to the standard chess because I like the way the new chess is minus the pieces. Is there anyway I can get back to playing the new chess without the divince code board as that is the only difference as of yesterday. Please HELP!!! ...

I would also like to mention that my dad has played with Garry Kasparov. At the time my dad was 8 and he was 6. My dad won the game. It was in Baku he says.  for some reason I can't seem to play yahoo.chess on Explorer or Firefox. On Explorer I can get past the regular logon and onto the chess game page But when I click on one of the game rooms, the applet fails to load (although it displays the advertisement and the word "Done" on the bottom left) On Firefox I can't get past clicking on the part of the yahoo.chess page that says "Looking for the standard chess?"..... Please help, what am I doing wrong. P.S. I downloaded Netscape 8.1 and yahoo.chess seems to work OK with that browser... still, for some reason I never liked netscape.... Please help. aa ...

 Hello, Our school's chess club would like to host a school-wide tournament, but we are afraid that we won't have enough chess sets. However, we do have a huge computer network at school, and were wondering if there was such a thing as a LAN chess program. Basically, this ideal program would let the tournament player sit at a computer, have a screen pop up showing all the pairings, and the user will ultimately be able to click on their pairing and start playing. There would be time controls, etc... Finally, when the game is done with, the score (along with the record of the game) gets sent to a central computer that pairs the next rounds. Basically, no paper, pencil, chess boards, chess clocks... So, anything out there like that, or do I have to program it myself? ...
