I want to start a breed rescue in my state. I'm thinking about eather a Keeshond or American Bulldog rescue. I want to start a rescue that's not already available in my state. How do I get more information on running a responsable rescue? I would rather have fosters like the Siberian Husky rescue in my state, as oposed to having them in a kennel all the time. I've checked into the other rescues methods. I volunteer for the local animal shelter. Right now i'm doing research on the possable breeds I might choose to start a rescue for. I know there are rescues for these breeds in Indiana. Lab Siberian Huskys (two of them) corgi Pitt Bulls German Shepherd Collie How do I find out what other breed rescues are in Indiana? Don't worry, I don't plan on starting for quite a while. I know I need more experance in this field. If I was to try and start without doing my research, I would be no better than a backyard breeder. Right now I'm working with the Humane Society in my town. But plan on volunteering for a breed rescue in the near future. teener_b, I know of two Siberian Husky rescues in Indiana. 1. Homes for huskies 2. Northern lights sled dog rescue. Wich one is non-profit? ...

I am an advocate for the APBT breed and research rescues to check them out. I recently came upon one, that claimed to be a rescue, but not only did not spay or neuter the dogs nor were they sold on contract to spay and neuter, but they offered ear cropping and *tail docking *which isn't even proper in the APBT breed standard*. They also sold these dogs for breeding purposes and were in conjunction with a breeder that bred CKC dogs and cross bred registries that didn't recoginize each other, so they had litters upon litters of unregisterable pups. On top of that the breeder tended to have 5-6 litters on the ground at the same time. Now when I emailed this man with questions about his rescue ethics, he was rude and defensive (of course) Well my question is, do you agree with my opinion that this rescue was completely insane and actually a puppy mill rather than a rescue? If you are interested in the website for the "rescue" email me and I will let you check it out for yourself. I just checked his site, and what is funny is since I sent him my emails questioning his ethics, his site has changed CONSIDERABLY. I am highly doubting that his ethics have, but he has made the site to seem like more of a rescue. ...

I live in a small mountain town. Two friends and I do a small scale rescue in out area. we all have over 30yrs. experience with dogs and have worked in large rescue organizations. I also do rescue for my breed club. Many of the rescues we take are on their last day at animal controle, some are strays from town that owners won't take care of, etc. One of our little group focuses on pit bulls, I do the small breed/mix dogs because my home is very small with small yard and the last friend takes bigger breeds. We bring these dogs into our homes to get a feel for them and what would be the best type home for them, are they dog friendly, housebroke, good with kids or what ever. We spay/neuter the dogs, micro chip, bring all shots up to date before they are placed and place a very nice add in the paper. We ask $150 adoption fee, screen adopters and visit their homes. Do you think this is a fare adoption fee? We make no money on these dogs. We can't save all. thank you ...

okay there seemed to be confusion in my last question, there was a dog at the vet and the vet was trying to find a home for it. my husband and I have been looking for this breed for ome time from a rescue (sheltie) We botjh volunteer for a rescue anf we foster. I have 1 dog of my own, 1 foster dog, no kids and 1 acre fenced in yard. I talked to my husband about adopting this dog. He said yes, but he would rather foster it through our rescue until it is adoptable and then adopt it if it'sa good fit. I called the rescue group, told them about this dog and told them that my husband and I were going to look at it tonight after work and we would probably adopt it. i told her if we decided not to our rescue could take it in and we would foster it if they needed us too. Sge said that was great, we are full and that would help. She emailed me and said that they are going to get the dog and someone else is fostering it because the foster we have just got fixed... and she didnt want any added stress to this dog. She has had 6 dogs at a time in her house (3 of which being fixed at the same time...) The woman who wants to foster is a new foster and already has 5 dogs of her own...was this fair? we did not go ahead nad take the dog because we wanted to do through the rescue. (they would no vet work---the vet was doing it all for free ---if they adopted him, then we could give them the $100 adoption fee and he would go on their list of adopted dogs......make any sense? ...

I was just looking over the adoption agreement of an animal recuse here on the east coast and compared to many of the other rules and policy of other rescues this one had a clause in regards to a change of address notification. From the way I read the ENTIRE thing and I could be wrong here, it comes off that the rescue has the right to take the dog if they deem the move harmful to the dog. Has anyone else run into something similar to this? Another issue I had with this was that the agreement is worded in the way that the RESCUE not the owner is the "sole owner" of said animal. This just seems like the dog is on loan to whoever adopts from them. I know the rescue is looking out for the best interest of the animal and that ppl abuse and neglect animals all the time, but some of this is just extreme. As I said I am looking at a handful this one is in PA and I am in Me, but they have some fosters up here. For the second answer there is no mention of micro-chipping whatsoever as opposed to other rescues. As I said out of all the ones i have looked over this one is the most extreme. ...

I was looking for a King Charles Spaniel to adopt and I came across this rescue with some for adoption. I started reading some of the info on the dogs, and there are two king charles spaniels that have been there for almost two years. The adoption fee for these two boys combined is $1000. And the rescue is only allowing them to be adopted together. I think these guys could have been adopted a long time ago ,if they had a more reasonable adoption fee. Since they have been there almost 2 years, I understand it cost a lot to fee them, board them and vet visits. But they could have avoided these cost by lowering the adoption fee and letting them be adopted quicker. I think the rescue is depriving these two boys of a good home. What do you think of this rescue? Should they lower the adoption fee? Let the two dogs be adopted separtly? Any other thoughts? ...

We have decided on a boxer as the breed for our family. My former in-laws had a boxer before and I know they are wonderful. I did not have a family then and therefore did not worry about how it was with children on a daily basis. My wife is concerned that if we get a dog rather than a puppy, he will be unreliable. I would prefer to rescue a young dog from BRLA. My wife was bit in the face as a child, and has issues with any dog that looks aggressive or acts aggressively. We rescued a 10 year-old gorgeous golden retriever 2 years ago. He became very attached to me, was fine with our then 4 year old daughter, but viciously attacked a small dog. We gave Sunny back to the rescue the next day. I have read more books since then to improve my training techniques. Still, should I try to convince my wife and family that a young rescue boxer is right for us? Do young boxers adapt well to new families? With all of the things that can go wrong when first socializing are rescues safe? ...

We recently lost our Border Collie Shep to a tumour. I know its too soon to get another dog but I have been thinking about some things. We are going to get another rescue dog as my mum is disabled and I work so we cant have a puppy. We live in a bungalow which is quite small and has a small garden. We got shep from a rescue home and they didnt seem to mind that our house was so small but this was 9 years ago. Basically I was hoping for another border collie as they are easy to train and would be good company for my mum. I'm worried theyre gonna examine my house and say its too small. We had no problems with shep and exercise as he would go for a long walk everyday. Also I'm hoping for a dog I can do agility with and I've also got a horse so I can take my dog up the field to play with. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had any problems getting a rescue dog in relation to problems with their housing? Many thanks ...

OK, I currently have 3 dogs: Aly a 9 year old German Shepherd who I rescued when she was 3 years old, Tani a 5 year old Beagle who I rescued when she was 3 1/2 years old and was blind and Zoe a 2 year old Labrador Retriever who is 7 years old and who I also rescued when she was 4 years old. I have rescued MANY other dogs from the shelter and now I have a dilemma. I went to a rescue shelter a few days ago and fell in love with a beautiful 6 year old Border Collie named Molly. She is adorable, sweet and affectionate. I brang Tani and Zoe with me to see Molly and they got along with each other really well. I also went to go see a litter of Portugee Water Dogs a week ago and fell in love with a beautiful little puppy. Obviously, I can't get both as I need a license to have more than 4 dogs and don't really want to have to get that lisence - I think 4 is enough. The PWD are beutiful and I know all about the breed. Come from Ch. lines, are screaned etc. Advice on what to do? Thx The PWD's cost $1050 each. They are professional breeders and have been breeding for around 30 years so I trust them with the health of the pups completely. I have owned a few pups before but not many. The thought of getting a cute little puppy who I will love and care for as much as I do my rescue dogs is so enjoyable. But then I think...; if I don't rescue the dog - he/she may be put to sleep and the huge animal lover than I am, I find it very hard to come to terms with that. I would blame myself for not adopting the dog if it did not find a good, loving home. I really have no clue what to do. All my dogs are socialized well and have fit into my family really well (of dogs and cats =P ). I owned an Akita once and I had 2 cats at the time - who said Akitas don't get along with cats!? I'm 70% sure it's NOT a kill shelter. Either way; I would probably still blame myself if it was a kill shelter or she went to a bad home. The sire and dam of the PWD have excellent temps and are very loving and affectionate; so are the pups! I feel like I have a close bond with the pup more than Molly (shelter dog) because I have seen her as a pup. I have nearly always wanted a PWD but have never really had enough money but I work from home and earn enough money to support me and my family of pets so I would be able to afford 'the pet of my dremas'. However, as an animal lover and as a strong supporter of the saying 'don't buy from pet stores or breeder, adopt at a shelter', I think I'd be contridicting myself if I went against what I tell nearly everyone. ** Excuse the spelling mistakes - am typing fast and am not paying attention to spelling =P I am a very active person and I walk my dogs for 40 minutes in the morning, 1 hour in the noon and sometimes (if I have time/energy), 20 minutes at night. Either breed would suit my lifestyle and home. I have a medium-large yard, 3 dogs (mentioned in first post) to play with, 2 cats (6 yrs old and 2 yrs old - both rescue cats) to annoy or get annoyed by, walk every day possible, know a fair bit about nearly all dog breeds and research ALL breeds that I consider buying/rescuing. ...

For the past few months FX has aired re-runs of "Rescue Me" late Saturday nights. They started with Season 1, Episode 1 and went all the way through Season 2's finale. Now with "Rescue Me" Season 4 ready to premiere, they decide not to air Season 3 episodes. I got hooked on "Rescue Me" after seeing the 1st episode and watched every episode they re-ran, and now I'm going to be lost during Season 4 since I didn't see Season 3. Does anyone know where I can see Season 3 episodes for free online? I searched Limewire, and there was nothing. Any help is appreciated. ...

i think im going to adopt a pair of baby rescue guinea pigs in stead of getting them from a breeder(never a pet store). i have done all my care research and just need to gather all my materials and get ready for them. i just wanted to know if at least most guinea pigs from rescues(texas rustlers GP rescue in dfw on theguineapigrescue.com for those who know it) are healthy so that i dont need to treat anything extra due to bad health and so they dont die. i would really like two normal, active and healthy guinea pigs. thanks ...

I'm bringing this up in light of the whole Ellen DeGereres incident and what some rescue groups do. I live in Dallas, and last yr this made the news. There was a woman who several years back, adopted a Cocker Spaniel from a local rescue group. She was a 30-something single professional woman and this dog was her life - basically her best friend. Afer having him for 3 years, one day, while she was at work he somehow escaped from her home (this had NEVER happened before) A person found him and contacted the rescue group (he still had the groups tag's on his collar in addition to his regualr ID tags). The group took him back but purposely did not contact or inform the woman that they had him. After a month of heartbreakingly searching, putting up flyers, ads in newspapers, etc for her dog, she received a tip the rescue group had him. The group refused to give him back saying she was an unfit pet owner becasue he escaped. She had to take them to court to get him back. In response to the first responder, one of the FIRST numbers this lady called was the rescue group. She then called them back a few weeks later to see if they had any updates and they LIED telling her they didn't have the dog. That was one of the main issues in the lawsuit! Her vetinarian even wrote the rescue group a letter on her behalf saying what a loving and responsible pet owner she was and urging them to return the dog to this lady but they still refused - hence the lawsuit. The dog had complete tags and was microchipped. It was not known or understood why the person who found hm called the rescue group instead of her number. She finally got the dog back. The rescue group was under a lot of fire. For the person who didn't believe me I tried to do a search to find the story but I can't as I dont' remember the lady's or the rescue group's name. I swear it's true. ...

They failed at their job and too call them heroes is just plain wrong! It's called the only time they would be called heroes if they had done the job they were paid to do and that is to rescue them anything short is failure! I know three people died trying to rescue them, well guess what all the miners are going too die too! I call it a pathetic attempt at getting too them who cares if the mountain is unstable who cares you go for it! You leave everything out there and you rescue them no matter what! ...
