 How is it possible that a 2006 Porsche 997 Turbo is faster as an automatic-tiptronic transmission than as a manual 5 speed transmission? this is what I read: "According to official Porsche figures, it produces 480 hp, accelerates 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.7 seconds with manual transmission and 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.4 seconds with Tiptronic S transmission, and has a top speed of 193 miles per hour." the manual tranny gets you 3.7 and the tiptronic which is an automatic gets you 3.4 everything i've read about automatics is that they are slightly slower than manual trannies. and tiptronic is an automatic..just with a different name. i've driven German tiptronics in BMW's and Porsches before..i just didn't know they were faster than manual trannies. you know that all high end cars these days also use automatics like Maybachs, the new Audi S8 and RS6 turbo,..seems like automatics are faster than stick shift cars..but people say stick shift cars are more fun to drive around in. ...

 They're all converging in the same price range right now, which makes for interesting comparisons. I have my own opinion on the subject, and my mechanic has given me his answer; but just for fun, how about you other P-car fans? The ultimate air-cooled monster Porsche (that refuses to depreciate)? The faster-than-you-need but still civilized 996TT, with its threat of high maintenance costs? The rough but rewarding, track-focused GT3? Or the thoroughly modern, depreciation-prone but still under warranty base 997 Carrera? Throw purchase price out the window... which would you want to own and why? ...
