I have some experience with music. I'm in the school band and I'm currently taking AP Music Theory at my high school. I have a keyboard, but I only use it to help me with theory. I want to start taking piano lessons and vocal lessons, but that would really expensive. Would it be 'safe' to take Piano and Vocal at a local community college? I'm not sure if I want to take vocal at the college, because I'd rather pay more then damage my vocals. But how about piano? Would it be safe to take piano? I'm actually thinking about taking private vocal lessons. ...

I have just recently quit a stressful job that brought on a lot of anxiety. During this time I held in vocal tics (tics such as humm and huhh). When I was working in the job, I had also done many vocal tics at home. I was diagnosed with anxiety and Tourette's. However, I have never had vocal tics up until the sixth month of my job. I have shaked my head very rarely at times when I was nervous in the past (going back years). By the way, I'm 22 years old. I was wondering if vocal tics could be brought on by just anxiety, and not Tourette's syndrome. Thank you. Just to let you know, when I stopped my job, my vocal tics at home stopped. Granted, I've been under both Klonopin and Halderol (sp?), but still ... can't that prove it isn't Tourette's? In addition, I saw my neurologist, and he did brain wave tests on me that were negative. An MRI of my brain was negative, and the neurologist used that funny looking "axe" thing for my reflexes. He said that I do not have tourette's, but rather, just anxiety. btw, I was diagnosed with tourette's by my psychologist, not neurologist ...

Two years ago I decided to join choir at my high school. Prior to that I had no experience singing in a choir nor with a vocal instructor. However, through experimenting with my voice on my own time, I have been unarguably the strongest double bass/baritone in my school's choral program. My range at the moment is a B an octave below low C to to middle C. Low notes come naturally and I can easily sing them both loud and soft. However, as I start nearing middle C, I find myself losing the ability to push the notes out and maintain a medium to strong volume. The tone of the notes at and above middle C are also shaky. Lower notes are obviously my forte, while higher baritone notes are my weakness. What can I do to work myself into widening my vocal range to the point that I am able to sing and sustain notes above middle C? Also, is it possible to reach the tenor range in years to come with vocal instruction while majoring in vocals during college? ...

A little history... I have Black, Orange and Grey cats. The Black was the vocal one, Orange was semi quiet and Grey is practically mute. We got rid of Black and all of a sudden Orange took his place as the musical animal, howling at all hours of the night while Grey was still ?mute? My sister's BF took the Orange one and now the quiet Grey won't shut up. Meowing endlessly, howling at night. He'll sit there in the kitchen looking at us and meowing. I don?t think it?s cause he is lonely cause the other two howled anyway when they were together. Does anyone know WHY this is happening? He goes from being the "baby" mute to full force vocal cat!! He is about 4-5 years old and hardly made a peep until about 4 months ago when Orange left. Does anyone know why / how I can make him be quiet short of removing his vocal box (kidding) I've done the whole water bottle thing and nothing. HELP PLEASE lol - we are dedinately not getting another cat - having 3 vocal ones have turned us right off of ever getting another cat again. ...

I?ve had two vocal coaches in the last 3 years. Today I decided to stop visiting the last one because she was very abusive, for example she told me once: ?If I?d sung like you, I would have been kicked out of the music school immediately?. Lovely... But I?m not sure I should find a new one. Each session went like this: voice warm-up, then I had to sing the songs I prepared for, then they told me what they thought about it. I can do this at home and I have my family who may be able to tell me what they think about my singing. I?m also afraid that vocal coach(es) ?force? me into some singing technique that they consider the only way to go (because they all have their ideas about singing that they stick to). Every time I tried to experiment with something new that could be called ?my style? they said it?s wrong, out of tune, bad technique etc. I don?t need that. So do you think it?d be worth getting a new vocal coach? Or should I forget them and do it my own way? ...

I am thinking about getting singing lessons but I don't want to waste my money on someone who's not that great. How do I check for credientials and things of that nature? Also, I'm nervous about getting a vocal coach because I am nervous about singing in front of ppl outside my immediate family (silly, I know). With that, would you prefer that I get a vocal lessons from a DVD set like "Singing Success" by Brett Manning? Which is better, conquering my very silly fear and singing in front of other people or learning via a DVD set like "Singing Success?" Is it worth it to try the DVD and then the vocal coach afterwards? Last part of my long question: aside from classical, what are the diffrent types of vocal training and which would you recommend (including classical)? If you just came from reading my last question...singing and dancing are my two extrememly weak points and are also things I really wish I could do. Jan, I wanted to get singing lessons so I could get over my fear of singing in front of ppl (long story) and so I can get back into musical theater. I stopped doing musical theater because I heard myself on a recording and was too embarrassed to go back.  It has been 5 days since I recovered from my fever. My phlegm has been clearing up pretty well. I've been drinking about 10-12 cups of water a day (read it from some website saying that doing so will thin ur phlegm faster, leading to a faster recovery), taking medication, staying away from food that builds phlegm and getting lots of rest. However, I am still unable to reach vocal notes that I could usually do with ease when I wasn't sick. To make things worse, I have a gig coming up this Sunday, and my vocal range is quite limited to what I am expected to do. Any suggestions on how I can rid this phlegm thats affecting my vocal chords? Cause everytime I try to hit a high note, it feels like there's something blocking my vocal chords and I end up hitting a 'blank' note instead. ...

I take a vocal music class in my middle school and I'm doing research for a project. Some of my sources talk about vocal folds, some about chords. I know that vocal folds is a correct term, but what is a vocal chord? If you can give me sources that would be great. ...
